Australian Immigration

ACCI urges increasing skilled migration to 200,000 per year

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has urged the government to increase its annual skilled migration intake to 200,000 people.

In its “Better Australia” strategy, the ACCI outlined 10 recommended measures to improve Australia’s economic performance by 2050, one of which suggested that increasing migration intake is necessary to address the severe skill shortages in the country.

It also said that nearly doubling the skilled migration program intake would allow Australia to secure its economic recovery following the pandemic.

Skills shortage threatens Australian infrastructure projects

Australian advisory group Infrastructure Australia has said that severe skills shortages in the country could undermine public infrastructure projects.

According to Infrastructure Australia’s first Infrastructure Market Capacity report, Australia is likely to face shortages in the number of skilled individuals such as engineers, architects and geologists.

The report found that skill shortages in Australia could lead to one in three industry jobs being unfulfilled, which is equivalent to 105,000 positions by 2023.

Canadian Immigration

Canada welcomed record 45,000 new immigrants in September

Canada welcomed a record 45,000 new immigrants in September, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has confirmed.

This number of new immigrants is the highest Canada has welcomed in its modern history and one of the biggest in all of Canadian history.

Welcoming such a large number of new immigrants to the country has allowed Canada to be firmly on track to meeting its immigration target of landing 401,000 new permanent residents this year.

New Zealand Immigration

NZ Productivity Commission calls for higher immigration rate

New Zealand’s Productivity Commission has called on the government to increase its immigration rate amid a reduced number of migrant arrivals during the pandemic.

The commission also called New Zealand’s pre-pandemic immigration rates “unsustainable” and criticised the government’s “inability or unwillingness” to build an infrastructure to support prospective migrants.

Moreover, the Productivity Commission urged the New Zealand government to remove visa conditions that tied skilled migrants to a specific employer in the country.

Australia’s National Sport – Cricket!

Much like the subcontinent, Australia is also a cricket-loving country – so much so that it is considered the national sport of the Land Down Under! Australians love cricket in all formats – One Day Internationals (ODIs), Test matches, and the faster-paced T20s.

With the people’s craze surrounding cricket running high in Australia, the Australian national cricket team has been hugely successful on the international stage. The Australian men’s cricket team has won five World Cups (1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2015), making Australia the most successful cricket playing nation today. In addition to World Cups, Australia has also won numerous other trophies, with the ICC Champions Trophy and Ashes Series being the most notable triumphs.

Australia is also home to some of the most famous cricket grounds, such as the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and the Adelaide Oval. Famous Australians to play cricket include Shane Warne, Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, and Sir Donald Bradman, who is widely regarded as the greatest cricketer of all time.
