RBA governor backs skilled migration to AU for economic recovery

Philip Lowe, governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), has said an influx of skilled immigrants to Australia is essential to restarting the country’s economic growth after the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to CEDA, RBA governor Lowe suggested Australia should start looking for offshore workers to fill vacancies left by the major slump in the country’s population growth, caused in part by border closures and travel restrictions.

With a lack of capably qualified local employees, Australian industries are crying out for skilled workers, and the best solution lies in inviting and hiring skilled migrants to Australia, according to governor Lowe.

Australia updates occupations list for skilled migration

The Australian government has added the Social Worker occupation (ANZSCO 272511) to its Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL), which will allow sponsored skilled immigrants to travel to Australia and fill crucial gaps in the country’s critical sectors.

Employers in Australia will now be able to nominate skilled foreign individuals for the Social Worker occupation with the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa (subclass 186), Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) visa (subclass 187), Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457), Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482) and the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494).

BC reports uplift in Canadian skilled migration in 2019

British Columbia saw the most provincial nominations issued in a single year and the largest number of registrants for skilled migration to Canada in 2019, according to the BC PNP Statistical Report for 2019.

The report shows that BC saw a significant jump from 2018 in the number of skilled workers moving to Canada via the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP).

A total of 6,551 applicants were able to successfully obtain permanent residence in Canada with a provincial nomination from British Columbia under the Skills Immigration (SI) stream of the BC PNP.

Canadian immigration plan to support post-pandemic economic recovery

Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marco Mendicino has announced that the 2021-2023 Immigration Levels Plan will help the Canadian economy recover in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a press release, Mr Mendicino described the new Immigration Levels Plan as a pathway for significant increases in immigration numbers in the next three years, which will drive future growth and create new jobs for Canadian residents in an effort to speed up Canada’s post-pandemic economic recovery.

Under the new Plan, economic growth has been prioritized, with 60 per cent of all Canadian admissions coming from the Economic Class.

New Zealand Immigration

Migration to NZ to benefit from employment rights for international students

Chris Whelan, Chief Executive of Universities New Zealand, said in a press release that the long-term reputational and financial impact of offering employment rights to international students far exceeds any short-term benefits to New Zealanders, and makes the country an attractive migration destination for international students and skilled migrants.

Moreover, international students who are given post-study work rights can also recommend NZ and its opportunities to fellow students, thus opening doors to possibilities such as joint-research with foreign universities, as well as promoting tourism.
