Australian Immigration

Australian states provide skilled visa program updates

Australian states and territories are driving up efforts to fill up the remaining places on their skilled visa program allocations for skilled migration to Australia.

Australian regions have increased efforts to accept Australian skilled migration applications with the subclasses 190 and 491 visas, with a strong focus on occupations that fill critical skills required to support Australia’s economic recovery following the pandemic.

States such as New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia have provided updates on their skilled visa programs, which you can read by clicking here.

NSW announces new occupations list for skilled migration to Australia

New South Wales has announced a new occupations list for skilled migration to Australia with the Skilled Nominated (Permanent) visa (subclass 190) and the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491).

In the new occupations list, the engineering and health sector occupations have been largely prioritised, as New South Wales – like the rest of Australia – attempts to boost its economic recovery following the coronavirus pandemic.

Canadian Immigration

Canada celebrates positive impact of Canadian immigration

The Government of Canada has launched an international campaign to recognize and celebrate the positive impacts of migration to Canada.

The global campaign, titled “It Takes a Community”, highlights the numerous ways in which migrants can contribute to local communities and aims to counter the spread of misinformation and anti-immigrant sentiment around the world.

Speaking on the campaign, Canadian Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino called attention to the importance of recognizing the ways in which migrants contribute positively to their communities, especially in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

5,000 Express Entry candidates invited with 432 CRS cutoff

Canada invited 5,000 Express Entry applicants to apply for Canadian immigration in the latest invitation round.

The latest round of the draw, convened on April 1, 2021, saw Canada’s Express Entry score requirement for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) candidates also drop to 432 points – 17 points less than the previous CEC draw.

Candidates who submitted their Express Entry profiles before February 16, 2021, were issued invitations to apply (ITAs) for migration to Canada in this round of the draw.

New Zealand Immigration

Immigration NZ cites lockdowns for visa processing delay

Immigration New Zealand has blamed recent lockdowns due to the Covid-19 pandemic for a stalled visa residence queue as fears of a slower immigration process grow among applicants.

Addressing a lengthy backlog of residence visa applications, Immigration New Zealand said that the recent lockdowns in Auckland are to blame for stalled processing of residence visa applications, with the oldest applications dating back to July 2019.

Migration applicants to New Zealand tracking the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) queue have said that the applications treated as ‘non-priority’ have only moved one day in four weeks.

Illegal US border crossings remain on the rise

Illegal border crossings at the US-Mexico border continued to rise as Central American families look to force their way in to the United States.

In February 2021, nearly 19,000 people were apprehended by US agents along the southern border – a threefold increase from the previous month in the number of immigrant families trying to enter the US.

Migrants mostly consisting of children and families continue to try and gain entry to the US despite risking being detained and expelled to Mexico by border agents.
