Australian sectors in severe need of skilled migrants: ACCI
The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has said
several sectors in Australia are in desperate need of skilled migrants due to
‘severe shortages.’
About 14 occupations in Australia, including engineers, IT
specialists and medical technicians, are in dire need of reinforcements in the
form of skilled migrants.
The ACCI warned that due to the international travel ban in the
wake of the pandemic as well as a lack of aptly skilled local talent, Australia
has suffered from severe workforce shortages.

ACCI’s comments on Australia’s skills shortages.
Global Talent visa approvals boost Australian tech sector
Australia’s tech sector received the most Global Talent visa
approvals for skilled migration candidates to Australia, the Department of Home
Affairs has revealed.
According to data provided by the Department, Australian
immigration candidates in the tech sector under the Global Talent Independent
(GTI) program accounted for the majority of skilled migration visa recipients
between July 1 and December 31 last year.
Throughout the latter half of last year, more than 11,000 GTI
visas were granted to skilled individuals working in Quantum Information,
Advanced Digital Data, Data Science and IT fields.

NZ to consider revamping skilled migrant residency program
New Zealand’s skilled migrant residency program is in need of a
review, Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi has said.
He also said that no decision has yet been made on restarting
the selection of Expressions of Interest (EOI) for skilled workers, but that
Immigration New Zealand will revisit the issue later this month.
Immigration New Zealand, the country’s immigration department,
is yet to address thousands of immigrants and their families, who are all

US detains close to 100,000 migrants at Mexico border
United States border agents detained nearly 100,000 migrants at
the US – Mexico border in February, preliminary figures show.
The figures illustrate an upward trend of border crossing
attempts and a growing migrant influx at the country’s southwest border as
President Joe Biden works to roll back predecessor Donald Trump’s restrictive
migration policies.
The number of migrants detained in February is the highest
monthly number since June 2019 and the highest for the month of February since
2006.
