Australian Immigration

Australia urged to match business needs to skilled migration

The Australian government has been urged to establish a new online platform that would match employers with skilled migrants arriving in Australia.

According to research conducted by the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) based on analysis of the DoHA and Seek, around 23 per cent of permanent skilled migrants in Australia work in jobs below their skill level.

The report shows that skilled immigrants in Australia working in occupations that undermine their skill level deals a significant blow to their productivity, as this underutilisation cost them at least $1.25 billion in past wages between 2013 and 2018.

Slow skilled migration to Australia causing acute skills shortage

A blocked skilled migration pipeline to Australia is causing critical skills and labour shortages across the country, a report by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has found.

In its submission to Australia’s Joint Standing Committee, the ACCI warned the country’s federal government against rising skills and labour shortages due to the pandemic.

Moreover, it urged the Australian government to make skilled migration more accessible so that businesses can access critical skills through Australia’s skilled migration program.

Canadian Immigration

Canada restricts immigration due to new Covid-19 variants

The Canadian government has announced that flights from India and Pakistan will be banned for 30 days from entering Canada to protect Canadian residents and prevent the spread of the new variant of the coronavirus.

According to Canada’s deputy chief public health officer Dr Howard Njoo, the new strain might be more transmissible, cause more severe health issues, and could render some vaccines less effective.

Canadian provinces and territories are already grappling with a third wave of rising Covid-19 cases, which has prompted stricter lockdown measures throughout the country.

6,000 Express Entry candidates invited with 417 CRS score

Canada held its second-largest ever Express Entry draw in which 6,000 candidates were invited to apply for permanent skilled migration to Canada with a CRS score of 417 points.

This latest round of the Express Entry draw was held on April 16, 2021. All the candidates invited to apply for permanent residency in Canada belonged to the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) program.

The draw, conducted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), invited 1,000 more Express Entry candidates to apply for permanent Canadian immigration and had a cutoff score 15 points less than the previous CEC-only invitation round.

New Zealand Immigration

NZ government: News on residence visa decisions imminent

The New Zealand government has said it will soon announce when the processing of skilled migration residence applications will restart.

Speaking on the processing of skilled migration residence EOIs, a spokesperson for NZ immigration Minister Kris Faafoi said there have been instructions regarding resuming the selection process and a decision could be announced soon.

Due to the pandemic, EOIs submitted by skilled migrants to NZ applying for residency have not been selected since last year, which has resulted in a lengthy backlog of applications for Immigration New Zealand to review.

Organizations call for pathway to US citizenship

A US organisation is calling for an immigration reform in the country that will provide immigrants with protection and a pathway to US citizenship.

The May First Coalition, comprised of local organisations and crop workers in California, has been organizing an annual march since 2006 to raise awareness to its demands of having immigrant protection and a pathway to US citizenship.

About half of California’s crop workers are undocumented, with many long-term residents and their US-born children living in fear of being deported, according to the Department of Agriculture.
